Social Emotional Learning

Hello WJMS families! Welcome to the Colt Connection, WJMS' Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Family Newsletter and resource page. Each week all WJMS students engage in a social emotional lesson in Advise. The purpose of the Colt Connection is to extend SEL learning and resources to WJMS families.

The Colt Connection will support students and their adults to engage in meaningful conversations at home to help foster healthy and nurturing family environments.

Spring SEL Bulletin Board

April 29, 2022 is our annual Day Without Hate celebration. A Day Without Hate is a student-led, grassroots organization promoting non-violence, unity, and respect in our schools. After the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting students at Standley Lake asked students to wear white in order to show trust and commitment in each other to make their school a safer place. This day was an overwhelming success. Since then, students across Colorado and the nation have taken this incredibly positive day to their communities to say we will not tolerate violence or hate, and we will reach out to friends and acquaintances and say, “We are all in this together.”

Inside the World of SELS

Social Emotional Learning in Jeffco

Jeffco Public Schools creates and maintains a positive climate and culture in schools that is inclusive and safe for students, families and staff. With a commitment to empowering successful and productive citizens,  the district supports the growth of students through leveled, evidence-based implementation of social emotional learning programming.

What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which students and adults gain and apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to deal effectively with daily tasks and challenges.

Jeffco has adopted the five core competencies of SEL outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Management
  • Social Awareness
  • Relationship Skills
  • Responsible Decision-Making (CASEL, 2020)

SEL happens in safe and supportive school, family and community environments that support development and provide opportunities and recognition for successfully applying skills.
